Serious felony defense in Illinois
When the charge is murder, a sex offense, a gun case, or a drug conspiracy, the stakes are measured in years, and sometimes in decades.
Bedi & Singer defends people charged with serious felonies at the Leighton Criminal Court Building at 26th and California, in Cook County’s suburban courthouses, in the collar counties, and in courts across Illinois. Jonathan Bedi and Dena Singer began their careers trying cases in Cook County, and trial work remains at the center of the practice.
Cases move quickly from the first court date. Since Illinois ended cash bail in 2023, an early detention hearing can decide whether a client waits for trial at home or in custody. Bedi & Singer handles those hearings, the motions to suppress statements and evidence that follow, and trial.
Both partners work together on every case.
Murder and Violent Crimes
Murder
A murder charge calls for close review of the prosecution’s account of what happened and the evidence connecting the accused person to it. Bedi & Singer examines witness accounts, statements, physical evidence, and the circumstances surrounding the death while preparing the defense for court.
Attempted Murder
An attempted murder case can involve sharply different accounts of an encounter and the intent behind it. The defense needs to examine the sequence of events, identification evidence, injuries, recordings, and what witnesses actually saw or heard.
Aggravated Battery and Shootings
In a shooting or serious-injury case, the evidence may include surveillance footage, medical records, firearms testing, and conflicting witness accounts. Bedi & Singer examines the evidence tied to the individual client, including identification, the circumstances of the encounter, and any issue of self-defense.
Armed Robbery and Vehicular Hijackings
Robbery and vehicular hijacking allegations often turn on identification, the use or threatened use of force, and each person’s alleged role. The defense reviews recordings, witness statements, recovered property, location information, and the circumstances of any search or police interview.
Home Invasion
A home invasion allegation requires careful attention to what happened before, during, and after entry into a residence. Bedi & Singer reviews the people involved, the evidence of entry and occupancy, the alleged use of force or a weapon, and the reliability of the prosecution’s account.
Sex Offenses
Sexual Assault
Sexual assault allegations can affect a person’s family, work, and reputation before a case reaches court. The defense examines the accounts of those involved, communications, forensic evidence, and the timing of events. Decisions about statements to police and the preservation of evidence need careful attention.
Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault
Allegations involving a child require careful review of interviews, disclosures, medical evidence, and the circumstances in which statements were obtained. Bedi & Singer approaches the case through the evidence and the specific allegations, while helping the client understand the court process and decisions ahead.
Child Pornography and Internet Offenses
Illinois law uses the term child sexual abuse material for what was formerly called child pornography. An investigation involving online material can begin with a search of a home, a seized device, or contact from investigators. The defense may require examination of digital evidence, account access, device use, and what the evidence shows about a person’s knowledge and conduct. State and federal exposure may need to be considered together.
Sex Abuse Allegations
Sex abuse allegations can arise in personal relationships, workplaces, schools, or other settings. Bedi & Singer reviews the allegation, the surrounding communications, witness accounts, and any related institutional investigation. The defense must account for the criminal case as well as the decisions a client faces outside court.
Guns/Drug Offenses
Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
A weapon charge may follow a traffic stop, a search, or another police encounter. The defense examines the basis for the stop or search, where the weapon was found, who had access to it, and the law that applies to the person and the alleged conduct.
Repeat Offender Firearm Charges
Illinois firearm charges involving prior convictions require review of both the present allegation and the earlier court records. The offense formerly called armed habitual criminal is now named unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender. Bedi & Singer examines the alleged possession, the qualifying convictions, and the circumstances of the search or arrest.
Drug Possession and Distribution
Drug cases can involve disputes over possession, knowledge, the purpose of a transaction, or an alleged role in a larger operation. The defense reviews searches, laboratory evidence, recordings, communications, and witness accounts. The facts tied to the individual client matter alongside the government’s broader theory.
Post Convictions
Sentencing Hearings
Preparation for sentencing includes the court record and the person who will be sentenced. Bedi & Singer works with the client to identify relevant history, circumstances, and supporting material, address disputed information, and present the defense position at the hearing.
Motions for New Trial
After a verdict, the trial record needs careful review for possible grounds to request a new trial. Bedi & Singer evaluates the proceedings, evidence, and issues raised in court. Deadlines and the available procedure depend on the case, so this review should begin promptly.
Appeals
An appeal asks a higher court to review the trial record for errors in the rulings, the instructions or the sentence. Bedi & Singer reviews federal and Illinois cases for appeal, identifies what was preserved and what still has to be filed, and checks the deadlines first: generally 14 days for a federal notice of appeal and 30 days in Illinois.
Post-Convictions
A person seeking relief after a conviction may need review of the trial record, earlier appeals, and evidence outside the original record. Bedi & Singer evaluates the potential claim, the available procedure, and the obstacles to bringing it. The route forward depends on the case’s history and the legal grounds for relief.
