Federal criminal defense, before and after charges

Many federal cases begin long before an indictment. Often the first sign that the government has been building a case for months is a target letter, a grand jury subpoena, a search warrant, or agents at the door.

Bedi & Singer defends individuals in federal criminal investigations and prosecutions nationwide: executives, physicians, business owners, public officials, and others whose liberty, careers, and reputations are at stake. Bedi & Singer advises targets, subjects, and witnesses, responds to subpoenas, and represents clients through indictment, trial, sentencing, and appeal.

Bedi & Singer’s office is a block from the Dirksen federal courthouse in Chicago, home of the Northern District of Illinois and the Seventh Circuit, and its federal work extends to courts across the country. Lawyers at other firms also call Bedi & Singer when an individual in a corporate or internal investigation needs separate counsel.

Both partners work on Bedi & Singer’s cases together, and every case is prepared as though it will be tried.

Investigations

Target Letters

A federal target letter is a reason to obtain advice before responding or speaking with investigators. Bedi & Singer reviews the letter, any requested response, and the client’s circumstances, then considers how to communicate with prosecutors and preserve relevant records. A target letter is not an indictment and does not mean charges are inevitable.

About Target Letters

Grand Jury Subpoenas

A grand jury subpoena may seek testimony, documents, or other records. Bedi & Singer reviews what is requested, the response date, potential privilege issues, and the person’s possible exposure. The response needs to account for the subpoena’s requirements and the wider investigation; records should not be altered or destroyed.

About Grand Jury Subpoenas

Violent Crimes

Federal Homicide & Murder-for-Hire

A federal homicide or murder-for-hire allegation may involve recordings, electronic communications, cooperating witnesses, and disputed accounts of intent. Bedi & Singer examines the individual’s alleged role, the evidence behind the charge, and the basis for federal jurisdiction. The federal practice includes representation through trial.

About Federal Homicide & Murder-for-Hire

Hobbs Act Robbery

A Hobbs Act robbery investigation can involve surveillance, phone records, identification evidence, and allegations about several people’s roles. Bedi & Singer examines the claimed robbery, the evidence connecting the client to it, and the government’s basis for bringing the case in federal court.

About Hobbs Act Robbery

Sex Offenses and Internet Offenses

Federal sex-offense and internet investigations may begin with a search warrant, a seized device, or contact from investigators. The defense reviews how electronic evidence was obtained, who used the account or device, and what the records establish about the alleged conduct. The client’s specific role and knowledge require individual attention.

About Sex Offenses and Internet Offenses

Drug Conspiracy & Drug Trafficking

A drug conspiracy prosecution may place one person within a much larger investigation. Bedi & Singer examines communications, surveillance, alleged transactions, and cooperating-witness accounts to assess the government’s claim about the client’s role. The defense also reviews searches, statements, and the evidence used to attribute drugs or conduct to the client.

Firearm Offenses and Felon in Possession

Federal firearm allegations can involve possession, prior convictions, or a claimed connection to another offense. The defense examines the firearm evidence, access to the place where it was found, the client’s records, and the circumstances of any search. Related state charges may also require attention.

Appeals

An appeal asks a higher court to review the trial record for errors in the rulings, the instructions or the sentence. Bedi & Singer reviews federal and Illinois cases for appeal, identifies what was preserved and what still has to be filed, and checks the deadlines first: generally 14 days for a federal notice of appeal and 30 days in Illinois.
